Sustainability is the foundation for aviation’s future which is why it continues to be a key area of focus for CANSO. ATM is committed to helping aviation achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and getting there will mean measuring progress every step of the way. CANSO’s GreenATM programme is playing its part - enabling ANSPs to scrutinise every facet of their operations for environmental improvements. Many of you are now engaging with us about this initiative and a special congratulations to Skyguide who were recipients of our very first GreenATM award, presented at our Executive Summit at Airspace World.
The past year has also ushered in new partnerships like the recently launched ACI and CANSO Airport System Capacity Enhancement (ASCE) programme aimed at removing the barriers to unlocking airport capacity and supporting the sustainable growth of air travel demand. And our collaboration with Infina to bring micro-learning modules to CANSO members. We will continue to seek out opportunities to work with our partners to develop more initiatives to raise the bar in ATM.
A final highlight for me was the success of our inaugural Airspace World. CANSO has been on a journey these past few years, laying the foundations for a stronger and more powerful Association. Taking ownership of ATM’s flagship global event will enable us to deliver greater value for our Members and fulfil our ambition to be the unifying voice of ATM. I couldn’t be more proud of the incredible hard work the CANSO team put into our first edition, and I look forward to an even more successful show in 2024.
After two years of post-pandemic recovery, the aviation industry in many parts of the world has returned to business as usual. CANSO Director General, Simon Hocquard, reflects on our evolving industry and the challenges ahead.

The pandemic presented many challenges for our industry, not least shifting traffic patterns across the globe. With some ANSPs already witnessing increases on 2019 traffic levels, contending with this surge requires significant flexibility.
That same agility will be essential to handle what looks set to be an increasingly dynamic future. The advent of new vehicles, both manned and unmanned, will transform the world of travel. With US$4.7 billion invested in the development of eVTOLs last year alone, these vehicles look set to become part of the ATM landscape sooner rather than later. Forging a pathway to our future integrated skies necessitates unprecedented cross-industry collaboration. That’s why I’m delighted with the progress we’re making on our Complete Air Traffic System vision. We continue to advance our collective vision at ICAO and received support at the ICAO Assembly for the prioritisation of key activities in ICAO's work programme. Since then, our Technical Committee has created a work plan with eight critical areas such as a new concepts of operations and optimised airspace. The plan was approved by the Global Council at our latest meeting in Geneva and paves the way for us to start turning words into action.
