Sustainability, alignment, and data – nine months in Operations
Since becoming CANSO’s new Operations Programme Manager in November 2021, our work has started to group around a number of common themes.
We have increased our focus on environmental sustainability and I look forward to the launch of CANSO’s new accreditation programme later this summer.
We’re also looking to align the ATM industry on a common vision and support the development of the Complete Air Traffic System (CATS) roadmap to achieve its vision for the skies of 2045. In support of that future vision, our ATFM/A-CDM Workgroup is currently working on publishing a white paper on the Long Range Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) concept and our Smart Digital Towers Task Force is updating their previously published (2020) guidance material to account for the latest and greatest technological developments.
Like many in the ATM industry, we want our work programmes to become more data-driven. To that end, we recently completed two surveys in an effort to identify the level at which ANSPs are tracking key performance indicators related to airspace capacity, efficiency and predictability and also their level of adoption of data-link technologies (ADS-C and CPDLC).
The results of the operational performance metrics survey were recently published on the CANSO website and the results or the data-link survey are being analysed to help determine which data-link implementation efforts and world regions could benefit most from our support.
As airspace opens up to new users across the aviation spectrum, we have also been trying to expand our membership to include experts familiar with those new technologies; we have therefore recently expanded the membership of our UAS/Emerging Technologies workgroup to include commercial space operations experts.
All of that good work is being shared more widely within the CANSO community too, with an emphasis on leadership and regional support, currently manifested by our involvement in a series of regional webinars, and encouraging membership of our workgroups from regions which are currently underrepresented.
Scott Leis
Programme Manager Operations
The FAA’s Scott Leis was appointed CANSO’s new Operations Programme Manager.
The CADENCE task force, supported by the ATFM/A-CDM workgroup Co-Chair, delivered a CADENCE Webinar to the Africa Region in August.
Representatives from the OSC’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)/Emerging Technologies (ET) workgroup and UAS Traffic Management (UTM) task force supported the Africa Region Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) webinar to discuss training, global implementation(s), best practices and lessons learned.
The Data-Link Implementation Task Force received the final results from the ANSP survey they circulated in August 2021 regarding implementation levels of ADS-C and Controller – Pilot Data Link Communication or CPDLC. Analysis of the results is underway.
The CANSO ATFM Data Exchange Network for Cooperative Excellence (CADENCE) Task Force (TF) finalised its governing Terms of Reference and Rules and Procedures document.
The CANSO Operational Performance Workgroup (OP WG) published its Report on Performance Metrics Survey (ROPMS). The report provides useful information that will be used in a variety of forums. Engagement with the Global Benchmarking Workgroup is occurring that is using the report to discuss the expansion of the KPI framework in the Global ANS Performance Report.
The CADENCE Task Force has been conducting outreach efforts in multiple regions to identify possible beneficiates of their free ATFM Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) platform known as the CADENCE Operational Information System (OIS).
A subgroup of the Environment Workgroup continued developing a new accreditation programme that will be launched at the CANSO Executive Summit in June.
