A busy period preparing for September’s Assembly
Again, it has been an interesting and busy time for CANSO ICAO Affairs. The work of the ICAO Council Aviation Recovery Task Force (CART) and Collaborative Arrangement for the Prevention and Management of Public Health Events in Civil Aviation (CAPSCA) have been ongoing to counter the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on aviation. CANSO has given inputs to ensure the interests of the ATM Industry were taken into account.
During the High-level Conference on COVID-19 (HLCC 2021), on 12 to 22 October 2021, CANSO submitted three working papers that were widely supported.
Further, CANSO’s Director General, Simon Hocquard, participated in the Ministerial Plenary Sessions and assisted in the drafting of the Ministerial Declaration.
CANSO is now preparing for the upcoming 41st Assembly where, among others, the ICAO triennial budget and business plan will be adopted. CANSO will be submitting several papers to the Assembly.
CANSO has established an ICAO Affairs workgroup (IAWG) to enhance participation of the CANSO membership in the ICAO work and assist the CANSO Director ICAO Affairs. The members of the IAWG will assist as well during the preparation of the ICAO Assemblies, High-Level meetings and other inputs to ICAO.
The ICAO Affairs pages of myCANSO are regularly updated with all relevant information from ICAO. The CANSO membership can use this to gather information regarding the current ICAO Council, ANC and Panels.

During the ICAO High-Level Conference on COVID-19 (HLCC2021), CANSO submitted three working papers covering prioritisation of the GANP, review of the GASP and introduction the CADENCE. The papers were widely supported by the Conference.
CANSO Director General, Simon Hocquard, was invited to participate during the Ministerial Plenary Sessions at the HLCC2021. He stressed the need for collaboration and work, individually and collectively, to deal with the lasting economic impacts of this crisis and move towards a recovery that is sustainable. In November, the ICAO Council held its annual informal “State of the Industry” briefing. The CANSO DG highlighted the challenges of the ATM industry regarding economic sustainability, the capacity for recovery and future growth, environmental sustainability and the need to evolve to meet future needs.
ICAO has created two new Panels to replace secretariat study groups on cyber security. The Cybersecurity Panel (CYSECP) and the Trust Framework Panel (TFP). CANSO is a member of both Panels.
CANSO has established an ICAO Affairs workgroup (IAWG) to enhance participation of the CANSO membership in the ICAO work and assist the CANSO Director ICAO Affairs and CANSO representatives to Panels in their inputs to the ICAO work. The IAWG has 35 members from 27 Member organisations.
