Stepping forward and stepping up
As a professional association, CANSO is for the Members and by the Members. The association can only succeed if it is built on a sense of purpose and values, and Members’ willingness to take actions. In this regard, it is heartening to see Members in the Asia Pacific stepping forward to contribute to the regional programmes despite their heavy domestic preoccupations.
Since the last CANSO AGM, the region has seen leadership renewal of the Asia Pacific Operations Workgroup and the Asia Pacific Safety Workgroup. DDG Miao Xuan from ATMB is now helming the former and ADG Tommy Au Yeung has taken over the latter. They both bring their rich experience and deep professional expertise to the workgroups.
CANSO Asia Pacific is strengthening the connections with ICAO Regional Office and fellow associations like IATA, ACI Asia-Pacific, IFATCA, IFALPA. A regular dialogue framework has been set up. The collaboration through such a network creates synergy for our common aspirations for the region.
Industry engagement is also helpful to co-create innovative solutions to meet ANSPs’ needs. Post-COVID, many ANSPs would be financially constrained to invest in huge Capex. In this regard, SWIM as a managed service, and ATC simulator over the cloud are being shared with the Members.
As a region without a supranational structure that can issue manadates on ATM developments, the responsibility to do the right thing for regional ATM rests squarely on the shoulders of the ANSPs. It is a responsibilty we should not take lightly.
Soh Poh Theen
CANSO Director Asia Pacific Affairs
CANSO participated in the following ICAO meetings on ANS planning and implementation:
A regional focus webinar on trajectory-based operations (TBO) focused on the on-going TBO demonstration in the Asia Pacific region and the need to start preparing for future capabilities.
CANSO and Indra conducted a joint webinar looking at 3-D radar technology.
CANSO organised a talk by the new ICAO Asia Pacific Regional Director, Ma Tao. He outlined the challenges for the region and shared his vision and plans for the ICAO Asia Pacific Office. His talk was followed by a panel discussion with regional representatives of IFALPA, IFATCA, IATA, and CANSO. One overarching theme in the discussion was the need for closer regional collaboration at a whole new level.
The first Asia Pacific Aviation Roundtable dialogue was held with Asia Pacific representatives of IATA, IFALPA, IFATCA, CANSO. The Roundtable was an initiative by CANSO to strengthen coordination among aviation organisations in the region.
CANSO participated in the Singapore Aviation Safety Forum and signed the Safety Charter. The Charter is a declaration of the industry’s commitment for a strong and positive safety culture in aviation.
CANSO met with the ICAO Asia Pacific Regional Director, Ma Tao. Ma is keen to step up the pace of ATM modernisation in the region.
"As the global voice for the ANSP community, CANSO provided tremendous support to members helping them maintain competency and sustainability by arranging various online seminars, workshops and experience sharing sessions during the global pandemic. These events helped bring together the best practices for members to get through the unprecedented challenges and steered them towards preparation for traffic recovery while remaining in line with the ICAO CART’s recommendations.
"I am looking forward to seeing CANSO’s continued efforts and pivotal role in supporting its members in promoting recovery strategies and the seamless ATM for a quicker recovery to pre-pandemic levels and beyond. CAD will continue to work with CANSO and all ANSPs in the region to meet the challenges ahead."
Tommy Au Yeung
Assistant Director-General of Civil Aviation
Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department
"Even as the air traffic movements are catching up on their way to exceeding pre-covid levels at several major airports in India, across the Asia Pacific Region and across the world, thanks to reduced restrictions, it is important for the ANS Organisations to collaborate and bring forward the much needed synergies and learn through the experiences of other ANSPs in the region. CANSO admirably provides the much-needed platform so to do.
"In the recent edition of the Asia Pacific CANSO Operations Work Group for 2022, CANSO members from the region had fruitful discussions and deliberations, which will pave the path for greater interactions and implementation of action plans. A well thought of agenda of “Future ATM”, “Sustainable ATM” and “ATM Consolidation”, provided great insight into the futuristic activities of ANSPs and the opportunities for coordinated SWIM and ATFM in the region. The industry presentations which were ably lined up by the CANSO APAC team were eye openers in terms of desirable upgrades that the States can contemplate in adherence to their own National Air Navigation Plans.
"In summary, I can't thank Mr Poh Theen Soh and his team for such a well organised activity which, despite different locations and time zones, was made possible through the active and enthusiastic participation of all attendees. I am delighted to be a part of the Indian ANSP, the Airports Authority of India, which will host the prestigious CANSO Asia Pacific Conference in November, at which we expect to unite over 170 senior air traffic management delegates from one of the world’s busiest air transport regions and beyond."
