Renewed enthusiasm from back to basics approach
The safety programme was heavily focused on a major revision of the recently published Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems (SMS). This revision was a return to basics in Safety Management as membership feedback indicated it was becoming unnecessarily complex without, in turn, increasing safety. Additionally, the SMS workgroup further collaborated with EUROCONTROL to establish an online portal for members to use to complete their maturity assessments. The new platform eliminates the need for spreadsheet and email-based completion methods, and provides dashboards and automated reporting for members.
A campaign was also launched to increase diversity and representation in the Safety Standing Committee Steering Group (SG). The effort resulted in the addition of four new members. The SG will continue to pursue additional representation from the LAC region and explore additional representation from Middle-East members.
Finally, significant effort was placed into re-invigorating motivation in the workgroups. Active participation was at an all-time low towards the end of COVID. Attending regional meetings to recruit new and active members showed some promise. Additionally, the re-start of in-person meetings, as mentioned below, seemed to inject a new enthusiasm into the workgroups.

Programme Manager, Safety
Several of the Safety workgroups met at DFS headquarters in Langen, Germany, with the Operations programme workgroups. The Safety Steering Committee also met, marking the first meeting for several new members who had joined in the previous months.
The Cyber Safety Workgroup delivered the final draft of the Cyber Safety Risk Assessment guide, which will be published in Q2 2023.
The Safety Intelligence Workgroup established a refreshed chair team and found considerable energy in a new project, in collaboration with Aireon, to re-envision safety data collection and reporting. Safety data definitions will be harmonised with a goal of producing forward-looking safety information. The proof of concept and dashboard is expected to launch in Q4 2023.
The Human Performance Management Workgroup completed a draft report on the Human Performance Survey, which will be published in Q2 2023.
Lea-Sophie Vink (AustroControl), Miguel Caparros (FTEJerez), and Marian Schuver (MovingDot) established a three-co-chair format to run the Human Performance Management Workgroup.
Published the new Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems.
Attended the African Region Safety and Operations meeting in Lusaka, Zambia. The meeting uncovered a deeper understanding of safety challenges in the region, particularly with support for programmes in the area of Fatigue Risk Management and Just Culture.
Presented two Global Safety Achievement Awards. The first, recognising work completed in 2021, went to ENAIRE's Jesús Romero and Christian Verdonk for their work in developing the Automatic Safety Monitoring Tool (ASMT). The second was given to the Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) team of Aeropath Ltd, for their Flight Advisor tool, developed in 2022.
